Europe’s security in the face of war in Ukraine: challenges, strategies and perspectives

The war in Ukraine is one of the greatest challenges to European security and international order in the 21st century. The conflict has not only changed the geopolitical layout of the region, but also affected NATO defense strategies, European Union policies and global international relations. The panel will analyze the key threats, challenges and possible scenarios for the situation. Discussants will discuss the geopolitical consequences of the war, including the role of international organizations, Russia’s deterrence strategy and Ukraine’s future on the international stage. Special attention will also be paid to the issues of hybrid warfare, cyber security and disinformation as tools for influencing societies and politics. Border security and the management of the refugee crisis will be an important focus of the panel. The panel will aim not only to diagnose current threats, but also to develop a strategy for the long-term security of the region.

Regulatory Frameworks for Algorithmic Decision-Making(en translation)

In an era where algorithms increasingly shape critical decisions across healthcare, finance, hiring, and governance, robust legal frameworks are essential to ensure fairness, accountability, and transparency. I will go into the complexities of regulatory responses to automated decision-making, exploring emerging policies that govern algorithmic development and deployment. I will explain the efficacy of existing regulations, identify critical gaps, and discuss best practices for ensuring stakeholders-from developers to end users-are adequately protected.

Key issues include liability for harms caused by algorithmic biases, the scope of transparency requirements, and the continually evolving international data protection standards. I will examine how legislation, such as the EU’s AI Act, can serve as both a template and a challenge in establishing global norms. The session also explores cross-disciplinary collaborations that leverage legal expertise, data science proficiency, and stakeholder engagement for robust compliance strategies. Attendees will gain a nuanced understanding of legal tools and enforcement mechanisms aimed at mitigating risk while enabling innovation.

Student agency: theory, practice, activism

This panel will offer an interdisciplinary reflection on student agency in both contemporary and historical contexts of higher education. The discussion will draw on theoretical frameworks of student engagement and development, alongside empirical research and case studies. We will explore when and how students become genuine agents of change within academic and social spaces, and examine the ways in which higher education institutions either support or constrain their agency. The panel seeks to bring together historical, sociological, pedagogical, and political perspectives, and to create a space for collective reflection on the role students can—and should—play in shaping democratic and inclusive universities.

Socialist thought from the XIX to the XXI century

Socialist thought has played a fundamental role over the last three centuries. It’s high degree of diversity, nuanced and controversial history, and strong theoretical roots in many social sciences make it a relevant topic of research. The aim of the panel is to create an interdisciplinary discussion that will allow young researchers to share their research results and thoughts on socialism and it’s history in its broader sense.

Migrations and diasporas in historical and contemporary perspective

Contemporary migration processes should be regarded as one of the most important components shaping the emerging international order and a significant element of the social reality in many countries. Their impact is visible on the micro scale (at the level of individuals and families), the meso scale (at the level of local communities, societies, and regions), as well as the macro scale (with regard to states, integration groupings such as the European Union, and more broadly – the entire global order). In the 19th century, international migrations took the form of mass movements, becoming a significant and lasting element of international reality. The further increase in the importance of migration as a crucial social, economic, and political phenomenon occurred in the 20th century, which led to this period being labeled the “age of migration.” In the 21st century, migration and diasporas have become among the most prominent topics of social and political debate, often polarizing public opinion. The panel constitutes an interdisciplinary discussion on migration processes and the diasporas that have emerged as a result.

Games and Education

The panel is dedicated to the role of games in higher education. We will discuss transformative games, simulations, and role-play as tools for developing social competencies and critical thinking. We will explore how games can support the educational process and foster student engagement.

Chemistry and Environmental

The panel is related to every aspect of chemistry (from analytical chemistry, medicinal chemistry, biochemistry, theoretical chemistry) and the environment (chemistry of materials, nanotechnology, ecology, environmental protection). All speakers from related sciences are welcome.

Asia – Politics and Society

The panel is dedicated to the analysis of contemporary political, social, and cultural processes taking place in Asia. We encourage participants to submit papers focusing on, among other topics, regime transformations, social movements, conflicts, international relations, and the challenges faced by Asian societies in the 21st century.
